Fifth Step in our Campaign in Saving Yeovil Rec.  June 2010

As a “Registered Green Space”

“Good News at Last For SYR & Its Supporters”

After many months of waiting SYR Legal team have been advised by Somerset County Council Legal Services that our TG Application will be brought to a “Non Statutory Enquiry”  in the Summer\Autumn of 2010.

This is following  advise from Leslie Blohm Counsel St Johns in Bristol. The Application was thought appropriate in our case to hold the enquiry before an Inspector who can then make a report to the County Council’s Regulation Committee on the findings, with a view to a final decision on the application.

Leslie Blohm from St. Johns Chambers in Bristol has agreed to act as an Inspector and has suggested that it is likely that an enquiry will take three days in order to hear from any persons who wish to give evidence before it.

SYR spokesman Ashley Strelling “This is the right decision given the complexities of the case and has vindicated the groups campaign to protect The Rec as a Green Space.

It is not to late for SSDC to drop their objections to our application and reflect on the public’s desire to maintain one of the last valuable free green open space in Yeovil for generations to come”

Kate Ashbrook the  General Secretary of The Open Spaces Society.

Has released a Press Statement.

The Open Spaces Society. Britain’s top organization concerned with the protection of town and village greens, is delighted that Somerset County Council has agreed that there will be a public inquiry into the application to register Yeovil Rec as a Town Green, the enquiry will be held over the summer/Autumn.

Says Kate Ashbrook - We have been advising the Save Yeovil Rec group on their application to register the land as a green and we are delighted that we are now on the way to getting a decision.

It’s deplorable that SSDC is intent on opposing the registration, because it wanted to build a Sports Zone on the location. Which would be illegal if the land is recorded as a green. The Council should treasure its open spaces, not destroy them. We urge it to change its tune and support the application for a green.

Yeovil Rec is a particularly spectacular space because of its size, proximity to the town centre, and popularity for informal recreation.

“We wish Save Yeovil Rec every success at the forthcoming public inquiry”
