Having been rejected by the Council at the Jan 2009 meeting. SSDC refuse to stop proposing development on Yeovil Rec despite the development plan saying “No Development” Their latest proposals are to build a Synthetic Hockey Pitch , this means unfortunately Yeovil Rec is under threat again from the SSDC ‘Mandarins' who have a phobia about “Green Space & Grass”.
The proposal would decimate the rec Open Space being located in the centre of the Rec with the loss of 4 full size football pitches and the Rugby pitch. These type of facilities are already built or planned by others within the town and is a duplication of facilities. This would completely destroy the open vista aspect of this rare urban community open green space that we all know so well and love, this will also reduce the free access area to a fraction of its current size. With just vastly reduced minor strips of grass around the fenced in areas becoming available so no more kite flying or informal games.
Save Yeovil Rec group was setup by People concerned about the previous Sports Zone proposals and this current development with the aim of maintaining Yeovil Rec as a green field site for outdoor free recreational use by the public in perpetuity, not fenced off for a select few in a private club.
