Having been rejected by the Council at the Jan 2009 meeting. SSDC refuse to omit Yeovil Rec from the latest round of site appraisals by them, this means unfortunately Yeovil Rec is under threat again from the SSDC ‘visionaries’.
The proposal if selected will be to utilise the site to accommodate a Sports
Zone with a ancillary 400 place car park incl. access road, as well as a full size indoor 50 m competition pool, leisure pool with flumes, fitness gym, indoor sports halls & climbing facilities with outdoor tennis courts and Astro turf football pitch. Many of these facilities are already built or planned by others within the town and is a duplication of facilities. This would completely destroy the open vista aspect of this rare urban community open green space that we all know so well and love, this will as well reduce the free access area to a fraction of its current size. With just vastly reduced minor strips of grass around the fenced in areas becoming available so no more kite flying.
In order to fund such a monstrosity smaller green space areas within SSDC are being considered for disposal, so your green space wherever you live is also under threat as well.
Save Yeovil Rec group was setup by People concerned about this development with the aim of maintaining Yeovil Rec as a green field site for
outdoor free recreational use by the public in perpetuity
