At the recent Yeovil Rec User
Forum in June 2010.......The
Council are proposing to build a synthetic Turf Hockey Pitch on the rec adjacent to the new changing rooms. If the Sports Zone is unsuccessful they are still going to build over the area to produce fenced off hockey pitches. Which will be the area where most parents sit and watch their children play on the new play facility. The existing hockey pitches were allowed to decay & fall into disrepair by the council.
They sold off part of the land for the new Doctors Surgery, despite residents concern in 2002 about dedicated recreation land being disposed off, we were told that the pitches were not used & hockey was now played in Sherborne and there was no requirement
Once again the Green Space of the Rec is under threat & shows how SSDC treat the site with little regard for maintaining the open space

SYR members along with residents attended the Public Consultation days at the Octagon Theatre in Yeovil.
The list of proposed sites was finally declared and also the stakeholders who attended the restricted meetings.
You were invited to select a short list of 3 potential sites around Yeovil from a list of 7, many residents viewed this as playing one location off against another, others were concerned about the size of the complex. The displays had small print & maps making them difficult to read to the annoyance of many residents & public attempting to make a valued judgement. It is thought a steady stream of people attended throughout the 3 days and voted accordingly despite the frustrations & the confusion of Brympton equating to Bunford
The council is expected to announce its findings for the preferred location site for the Sports Zone in September 2010

SYR has now been informed by The Legal Services Dept of Somerset County Council. That it has been decided it will be appropriate in our case to hold a “Non Statutory Town Green Enquiry” before an Inspector who will make a report to the County Council’s Regulation Committee with a view to a final decision on our Town Green Application for registration.
This has taken many hours of work by our Town Green Team and their legal advisors to convince Somerset County Council that we have a case to answer and has vindicated our team by this decision to hold an enquiry, which will be held in the Summer/Autumn of this year.
South Somerset District Council still remain the only objector to the application, and to date have refused to drop their objections against protecting “Yeovil Rec as a Green Space”
